.. a loud backfire could be a crossfire from one plug wire to another plug wire thus firing wrong cylinder. Easy for electrical high voltage to jump across older cracked wires. The plug under compression presents itself as a higher resistance due to compression. Then the current jumps across to a cylinder not under compression and fires and a valve(exhaust?) could very well be open giving you a bang. You can be careful washing but I'll still guess it is a wet electrical item. Washing is the only thing that you did since it ran well? G.
