How large is the cylinder you have just hooked up? Was it full of Hy-tran? If that cylinder is quite large and there was no oil in it, you may find it holds 2 to 3 times as much oil as the resovoir. How have you got it hooked? Is it a two line all the way to the cylinder? Are you using a factory valve, or is it an add on? If you answer these questions, someone will be able to help you.
