Saga of the SuperC and the 454D

Well, the saga continues! I had posted a question a couple weeks ago on a non-running SuperC and you guys responded with a lot of wisdom.. I had time to try most of the items, but not all. I am one of those guys with the long-distance relationships to tractors -- I live a few hundred miles from the farm! Anyway, the bottom line is that the SC is still not running, but there is spark when the lines are off the plug, there is gas in the cylinder, and the distributor is in the right orientation. I had to divert attention to our International 454D workhorse, though, and was not able to get the SC timing mark on the flywheel, or check the "one cylinder" firing yet.

The 454D was not starting well, and the guy who comes to the farm to service the tractor had apparently taken a quick look and said it was the alternator -- so Dad had it rebuilt. No luck. New batteries. Again no luck. (this was sounding similar to my SC problem!). So much for the "experts". But, when I looked at the system, and worked through all the options (like the possibility of a bad cutoff switch on the clutch lever), it sure seemed the starter/solinoid was bad. Took it off - it was the original, only 30 years old! A bit of wear on the teeth where it engaged.

Had it redone, with new solinoid, and viola! Life goes on. Now if I just had enough time to tinker just a bit more with the SC, I'd be in good shape. But at least the diesel workhorse was back in shape!! Alas, back to suburbia without a fix for the SC. But memorial day is coming soon...

More later, when I have the SC going. And next week I am adding a 230 with FH to match the SC, so I am really psyched! Best regards, all. Don(PA)
