Lanny, your 656 is a gear drive tractor. The lever on the left hand side is for the TA. The TA lever should remain in the forward position unless you need extra lugging power. TA's are a gear reduction that will increase pulling power, but it reduces ground speed at the same time. You only need to use the clutch when shifting gears, you can shift the TA from direct drive(lever forward) without clutching. Matt
