Lot of horror stories about no shields, had a shop man tell me he was working on a machine in the country and the farmers collie dog got into pto shaft, it had to be destroyed, it took coat of hair and skin and just shucked it off the poor dog. Also have fellows tell about hanging hitch pin on a rope to dangle into hole when hooking up a machine by themselves, only problem was pto grabbed the rope and jerked the seat spring out when they least expected it, then he would make a different arrangement.
