I'd guess you're on the right track, at least with ignition problems. If it's "putting" it says to me that one or more cylinders are dropping out. Most likely way for this to happen is a weak ignition system. Bad cap, bad wires, bad plugs. Remember, don't ever install the plugs wihtout setting the gap. Pretty hard for a carb to drop individual cylinders unless the drop is erratic. You can also hand choke the carb to check for a lean problem while you rev it, if it's too rich you'd probably see black smoke.
