I am rebuilding a MD now and had a similar sleeve problem. The main problem with the MD is that the manual calls for the sleeves to project .041 to .047 inch above the top of the block. When I installed my new sleeves they didn't project above the block nearly that much. I didn't understand why this was the case until I went to install the head. When I set the head gasket on the block I discovered that it's bore was larger than the sleeve upper shoulder and the sleeve must stick up enough so that it is against the head when the head bolts are torqued down. I ended up getting shims to shim the sleeves up to the .045 inch spec. My sleeves were not real tight either after I had the block cleaned at the local auto shop. I have the engine all reassembled, but haven't started my tractor yet as I am still working on other parts of the tractor. That whole system makes me nervous as to how it will work.
