You can replace that bearing without taking the cover off, but you miss the chance to find what else might be wrong. I had to take the cover off my H to replace the forth/fifth sliding gear anyway; I found that not only the bull pinion bearing was bad but also that the differential case bearing on that side had lost its keeper, the collar on the right side of the differential housing was broken off and the bolts holding the two halves of the diff. housing together were loose. And even with the cover off I had a hard time getting the bullgear lined up to put it back. Taking the cover off isn't too hard, all it takes is time and two strong backs.
