A couple of ways to test the low range of the TA: Drive in 5th gear up a hill or at least a slight incline about 1/2 throttle with TA in low range - engine should pull down as the tractor slows, if the tractor slows more than the engine pulls down then you have a bad TA. OR you can go up a steeper hill like a ditch or something in 3rd or 4th gear the same way. Yes, you can run it in direct drive forever with no harm as long as the TA clutch holds good. As far as the IPTO, it will whine when you have it off, if you don't use the PTO much disconnect the seasonal coupler. OR let it run when you can, this is best for them. We have a SMTA and like it, even though the TA is out.
