Lord help us, if you look in the archives you'll find more long threads than you'll ever have time to read and some pretty strong opinions on both sides of the detergent issue. You don't even want to get to brands. But the general feeling I get from it all is that detergents have been pretty much the standard for some years. For the short while I wanted to run non-det, I had to look a little to find it, but most brands sell both. Starting with a clean engine, the detergent isn't so much a scrubber as a formulation that allows small amounts of sludge to suspend itself in the oil as it develops and get it to the filter. The stuff that makes sludge with a Non-det would just settle in the pan or build up where it can because the oil wouldn't carry it away. You'll see in the threads, a few folks once had a bad experience with bearing failure or something else drastic and blame in on detergent oil and swear the stuff is poison. Can't say they're wrong--I'm not an engineer and they had the bad experience, not me. But the concept of the detergent seems sound enough. I ran non in my SuperC until I rebuilt it and nothing but detergent after. Wouldn't use a non-detergent in my car or truck. My 2c. Scotty
