I grew up on a North Dakota small grain farm. We had both a W-30 and an M. I have countless hours operating each. They would pull exactly the same loads at the same speeds (at least as close to the same speed as gears and engine RPM would allow) and we could use them inter-changeably on a particular job. 4-16s for a W-30 is NO WAY, I'll bet not even in 1st gear. They were a 3 plow tractor and we pulled 3-14s quite well. As far as 1st gear being worn out on them, I've never heard of that. The transmissions and final drives were very heavy. Ours was never apart in the 8 or so years we owned it, except for a motor overhaul. The W-30 was more inconvenient and awkward to handle than the M, but consider that the W-30 was quite a lot older design. I definitely remember that the M steered much easier - our M had a wide front. I don't know which would be heavier, gut feel is they were pretty close to the same weight
