A while back I was rebuilding both my HDs at the same time in a small garage. (bad idea) I was so proud to get the last nut and bolt together and everything adjusted, all ready to start them... and I found a spacer that goes WAY down inside the primary chaincase, next to the engine. The only thing to do was to take it all apart and put it in, right? At least I knew which bike it went on. I called it quits for the night. The next morning, after the morning coffee, I was out in the garage all set to go and the landlord walked in. He asked me what was up and when I told him, he started laughing his ... off. He had put an extra one in the box as a joke. He assured me that I had done it right, and for that there was no bloodshed. We all had a good laugh. sod
