I am a fourth generation Iowa farmer, as much as I like history, times are changing, again.
Big corp farms will be the rule unless the smaller and better run farms can band together, the NFO and Grange tried but as you know farmers are a proud, stuborn and independint lot.
Thing is we gotta get outa the comodity crop biz, raising a crop on the speculation somebody will want it becomes more risky every year.
Planting crops we have signed contracts for is better, getting those good contracts is why some are becoming ISO 9000 certified, the packers and grainbuyers have run things far to long, its time we got PAID for wht we do.
50 cents a bu extra on beans that can be proven where they came from and what they are is a nice profit but I think in ten years it will be much more profitable as the costomers relise the value in buying high grade inputs.
First thing is the farmer has got to think of him or herself as the supplier NOT the costomer.
I think this change over is gonna be harder than when they went from draft animals to tractors.
my 2 cents
