stevie, when i overhaul a f-4 magneto, i take the distributor cap off first and strip the carbon brushes and springs out of it and put them in a small parts container (baby food jar, ect.) then i put the cap in a coffee can half full of brake fluid or enough to cover the cap and put the plastic cover on the can and place it out of the way until i am ready for the cap, then i take the cap out and let it dry a couple of days. if the cap has paint on it, i'll take it out early and scrape the paint off with a plastic knife and put it back to soak some more. any way, when the cap has dried, i paint the cap with black liquid shoe polish (dosen't conduct electricity) on the outside where it is weathered and put the springs and brushes back in the places i took them out of. i get my aluminum pieces bead blasted after i strip them and clean them with varsol. i put the screws back in all their holes, so they can be cleaned also, then i paint the pieces on the outside only with silver paint but not until after i clean them with alcohol. you can bead blast the magnet, but not unless you place a keeper across the poles,(soft iron flat bar across the flat ends) then paint the magnet with black laquour (mispelled). case int. has the origional blue ribbon shop manual that covers all high tension magnetos used by i.h. i bought one back in 87 but cannot locate it right now but it covers the complete teardown and rebuild of the f-4, a must for you! make sure that no sand gets in the magneto or that it is all cleaned out before the mag is reassembled. i leave the inner races in and dirrect the machine shop not to blast the inside, especially the bearing races that are in the aluminum housings and when i clean with alcohol i make sure the races are free from dabris before i grease and reassemble.
