Hi Richard, the first thing I would do is to stand beside thebrake pedals and pull each forward by hand...this will give you a feel as to how closely they are set...if one feels weaker to pull than the other you need to adjust...first on the brake pans at the bottom make sure those set screws are in snug against the brake lining..they won't go all the way in , just till they are snug...then remove the split pins and the pin on the bottom of the brake clevis, with luck the clevis will turn allowing you to lengthen or shorten the clevis , shortening increases brake drag, lengthening decreases brake drag. As for the noise you hear it could be rust, brake dust, but you could have a lining getting down to the rivets. Removing the brake pans(covers) is not hard and you don't have to take the brake arm off the side of the pan (it all comes off together as a unit) If there is oil and greasy looking material in the pan and around the linings you will need new seals behind the drums. Undo the stud on the end of the drum and with two screw drivers one on each side wiggle and pry and the drum should slide off the shaft exposing the seal. If this is the case give us a shout on the forum and I or others will be glad to help you in seal replacement..I've done two H's in the last year..easy to work on but takes some time too...good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario
