If you change to an alternator with built in regulator, I have had good success with the Delco-Remy 10S1 alternator, rebuilt from my local auto parts store. They probably won't recognize the 10
S1 number. Just tell them you want an alternator for a 1978 Chevrolet. It has a plug in connector which you can buy for a buck or so. Attach the wire from the ammeter to the main terminal on the alternator, attach the red wire from the plug to the same terminal, then attach the white wire from the plug to a switch. You can attach it to the ignition switch along with the coil wire, but the tractor wont turn off when you turn off the ignition key. You may have to put a separate switch on the white wire to kill the alternator, then the ignition switch will turn off the tractor. If you have a two pole ignition switch, you may not need the separate switch.
