1944 Farmall H questions. Please Help

I have a few problems, and questions about my 1944 Farmall H . I started the H for the first time last night. Topped off the antifreeze. Checked the oil with the petcocks on the side of the oil pan. There was a flow out of the lower but not the upper. I can't find where to put the oil in to top it off. There is no cap on top of the valve cover. A service man said there is a port on the right side of the engine block but all I could see was the oil filter casing. Do I top off the oil there by removing the oil filter?
Also I put a brand new battery in the unit, hooked it up negative ground, positive hot. It turned over hard, that is, it didn't always want to turn a full revolution or more to allow the engine to fire and run. I had to press the starter intermittently until it would turn over continuously and fire. It did start right up after a couple of trys. It probably hasn't run in a couple of years. It has been sitting in a barn out of the weather. The gas may not be top notch. The engine misses a little bit.
I ran it for about an hour, it runs a little smoky. Is there a problem there? After I parked it back in the barn I tried to start it again and it didn't want to turn over easy again. I couldn't get it to start again. I didn't want to keep trying because it was getting late and the nut on the back of the starter button was getting hot. I didn't want to burn up the starter either. What do I do about it turning over so hard?
A question on the rotary switch by the amperes gauge, does this indicate that the ignition is turned on or that it is allowing a charge to go from the alternator (or generator) to the battery. Someone mentioned a Lo-charge, Hi-Charge, Off position arrangement, is that how it works?
One more question, on the control plate that has the choke, and pulley controls there is a lever that looks like a crank but the linkage rod goes to a pivot point on a casing forward of the ignition set up. The linkage is a push-pull. This casing has an approx. 2 1/2" cap that unscrews. What is this lever and what is the function of the unit it is attatched to?
Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to buy an owner's manual tomorrow from the service man but I can start thinking about the problem today, and advice from wise and knowledgeable owners is very valuable to me.
