460 Farmall stuck in gear

Posted by LWilbur on July 13, 1999 at 20:57:24 from (209.152.64.224):

Tractor has a history of the end of the shift lever jumping out of the transmission rails, somehow moving 2 of the 3 rails out of neutral and simultaneously into gear when this occurs. Any time more than 1 of the rails is out of neutral, the tractor gearing is locked up and tractor won't move. Clutch appears OK and tractor will run as long as the clutch is in--dies as soon as clutch is put in, due to the locked up gears.

Have had luck in the past taking off the shift lever/housing and forcing (more force than I care to admit) the 2 rails back to the center (neutral). Once all three rails are in neutral, then I reinstalled the shift lever. Shift works for a while then problem reocurs. This time can't seem to get the 2 rails to return to neutral. Tractor has progressively been more difficult to shift unless all tension is off the drive. Especially a problem shifting when this tractor is used as a loader tractor, which it is now and then.

1) Any suggestions how to return the rails to neutral, short of total disassembly?
2) Suggestions on what to do to make this shift easier, so this doesn't reoccur. Or is this just old age and learn to live with it?
