After I recovered my Regular I brought a few choice (small) parts back home with me. One of the things I brought was the small starting tank. The theory is that when I want to first get the thing started it will be nice to have a clean good starting tank. The trouble all centers around the gas cap. It's not the same design as the later models. We aren't sure what year the Regular is, and I keep forgetting to look at the serial #, but it's either a '24 or '28, certainly not later than a '28. So the gas cap is this almost flat affair. It looks like it should screw in, but it will NOT COME OFF!!! A month ago when I brought it home I half filled it with motor oil (though the outlet hole) and stood it upside down in the shed at my folks house. I haven't had time to get back 'till now, and I found that the oil had been slowly leaking out through the vent hole in the cap. I suppose this is good because I now know that the vent is clear, but I'm still pretty P.O. that I can't get it open... HELP!!! Like I said this cap is not at all like the later caps on the M, etcetra, but instead is almost flat. My largest channelocks are too small to turn it well, though a 14in pipe wrench fits pretty well. I haven't measured but I suspect it's about 2.5 inches across and the exposed part is only about 1/4in high. Thanks.
