Craig,

That is a big tractor you are looking to buy. I have heard that it was the most powerful two wheel drive that IH ever made. I think that you should take it. If you can really get it for $1000 then you should take it. Even if you spend several thousand dollars fixing it up you are still getting a great buy. But with a tractor like a 1586 in bad condition, there could be a lot wrong with it. It does sound pretty rough but I would find out how it runs in terms of engine, PTO, hydraulics etc. if it just looks bad then take it but if it doesn't run very good then it make take a lot to get it to perform like you want it to. That tractor can easily handle the work you have described. I wouldn't adivse you to buy a really good 1586 to work on your land because that would be too much tractor. That is the kind of tractor you get for a several hundred acre farm. but you are getting a good deal, which makes it OK. I have to admit i am very jealous of your predicament. Why can't i find big internationals for that kind of price? The only 86 series tractor i have ever used was an 886. it was a good tractor. one thing i do know that causes people trouble with those tractors is they change gears pretty roughly. but other than they are good machines. In conclusion, go for it!

Jeff

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
