I would focus less on the alternator and more on the 12v ignition conversion. Did you switch the coil leads so that hot is to plus and distributor is to minus terminal? (assuming you were positive ground before). Are you getting a healthy spark? This is the time of year where caps and rotors die because of condensation in my neck of the woods. Is your starter cranking well? When I installed my Hitachi, nothing was right until I rebuilt my starter because I had fried a brush connection trying to start it with a poor charge. Now it (my 1966 140)fires up like a champ since 2005 when I put it in.
Wiring is big post of Hitachi to Load side of ammeter (away from battery) and to outer smaller terminal on alternator. Inside (i.e. closer to center) small terminal goes through light/resistor/diode to key switch (coil side, not battery side). Same as BobM's #5 diagram, you just need to know that the outside little terminal on the Hitachi is equivalent to Delco #2 and inside to #1.I recommend a NAPA idiot light TGA 10 made by Echlin--looks right, works great, and just needs a 5/8" hole to live in.
