you can use the pos ground alt, but you must reverse the polarity of your grounding system. The pos ground alternator will not work the old way. They do make pos ground alternators, but they're like "hen's teeth." Here is the easy way: take the battery cables off, take battery in hand and "swith ends." Only, now be careful since the terminals will be more under the tank and you must take care not to ground the pos terminal to the tank with a wrench - - "bummer." The result will be that the neg terminal of the battery will now connect to the cable to the starter mounting bolt. The pos terminal will now connect to the cable to the hot side of the starter relay. Everything will be just like it was, only the battery will be reversed in the tray. Trust me, the starter will still turn the same way. The alternator, if not internally regulated, must have a voltage regulator. I used AutoZone 129965 VR706, on my 1941 H, less than $10. Run the wire from "BAT" on the alternator to the "hot side" of the switch. Run the wire from the "field" terminal on the alternator to the "field" clip on the VR, and one from the "ign" clip on the VR to the "dead side" switch position. It's lightweight, small, two wire, electronic, and you can mount it on the mid-frame just behind the engine and below the forward tank, be sure and secure well. If your alt is not internally regulated and you use it without a VR, kiss the battery good bye. Lastly, you're in luck with the ignition wires to the coil. The coil is not polarity sensitive, so just hook up and run. If you want some reassurance, mount the alternator so the belt will turn the pulley, but don't wire it or the VR. Switch the battery as mentioned. Crank her and watch. Then you can wire the alt and VR. Make sure the resistor for the coil remains in series between the coil and the ignition. Your ammeter will show the reverse (charge for discharge, etc.), unless you do reverse the two leads to it. It doesn't matter, just up to you. Good luck. I did it. RKS
