oil out the axle seals?

I just changed the oil on my 43 H and added what the book calls for.... 6 gallons of 90 wt oil. when i parked it i was dripping oil out the seals on both sides of the axles. when i pulled the old oil out i got just over 5 gallons out. I thought it might be dripping because it was a tad bit to full as it stopped drippping about 2 days later. there is a nice size puddle under each axle but no where near a gallon worth. the rear end seams to work just fine. i talked to the guy i bought it from and he said all he's ever done to it was grease it up once and a while.... whe i changed the oil it was a creamy color and my dad said that was the color of the oil, i din't care i changed it. I do alot of road gear driving with it and i never work the heck out of the lower gears. I know there is a check on the side of the tranny but i figured since i put in the correct amount after totally draining it it would be good. My question is this, the fluid that leaked out at the axles must be right at the top off point and what gear would be affected most by not having the extra half gallon or so in there? the guy i bought it from did work it hard and the tranny seams real nice, and all the gears hold. Plus when i did fill it up i thought it would quiet down the tranny a little and it did not. i could not notice the diffrence in fact i was wondering if i wasted 40 bucks on new oil? i know the gears are strait cut gears and they will make noise and that is normal. but how low does the rear end have to be before it hurts a gear. which gear would be most affected? thanks as it has been a while since i have seen inside of one of those trannys as there are quite reliable. in fact i never had a total failure. my dads 39 would not hold fifth but the guy he bought it from drove it like it was a car. nasty shift habbit. To me i rather take off in 5th and save the gear before i will grind the heck out of the gear. if your hauling a big load then you might need to a little but you can do it with out recking the gears. if your empty 5th is no problume taking off in unless your on a hill.
