My dad always taught me to use just regular grease gun grease. Put a coating on the post and on the inside of the cable. Then ( on our tractors) would smear it all over the outside. That may be a little messy for your purposes. There are some commercial products that you can brush on. Seems like we use one once that left kinda a greenish varnish like coating on the surface. The other post about cleaning with baking soda is right on. Gene
