More H charging problems

Hi guys, I just bought a 51 H at an auction and boy are there problems. First off some one put a 12v batt in it, and it was not charging. Also the kids from the FFA had been zipping around on it the night before and got the gears stuck in 4th, so at least everyone thought the trans was screwed also it wouldn't stay running without the choke on(it was out of gas!)and so I at least got the "restored" tractor cheap. After I got it home the trans was quickly dealt with and after jump starting it I noticed it wouldn't charge. I had put a 6 volt battery in it since the genny was stamped6v and the coil was still 6v. The FFa kids had hooked up the 12v battery neg ground style at one point. would that cook the VR? The tractor had been restored and some wires were hooked up wrong like the field and arm wires were backwards. also some wires were connected wrong in the switch case. I think I have everything hooked up right now, BUT it still won't charge and when I unhooked the gen to try a motor test nothing happened. so I took off the dust band and saw 3 brushes! this tractor has a regulator on the steering post and not the cut out type that uses a 3 brush genny. could this be the problem or should I just bite the bullet and get a new 2 brush gen and try that. A manual is next on the list, but I am hoping someone can help until then.
