The 6Volt Cub is a positive ground system, magneto ignition. It is important that you connect it as a positive ground since that affects performance and life of generator and starter. You may have already damaged the starter if you were operating as negative ground. That is a simple check at your local generator/starter/alternator repair shop. Also if you connected up as negative ground you may have affected the polarity of the generator. Get that checked as well. The battery/generator system only cranks the engine and runs the lights. The ignition is an entirely separate magneto system which is not connected to the battery. I would say that trying to convert to 12 volt system would be unnecessary since you can still get the right 6 volt battery.
