change the oil regularly, now if you haven't lately or you just bought it - use a good 30 wt, not multigrade, and use also one or two cans of STP oil treatment. The early smoke may be rings or oil leaking down worn valve guides. If it is rings, then the improved viscosity of the oil/STP will slow that down some. Actually, when the engine gets to operating temperature, the small amount of oil that leaks from the valve guides is burned more completely in the combustion stroke, and you see less visible evidence (blue smoke). Bad enough rings or bad enough valve guide leaks, - - and you would always see blue. I'd bet that if you work the old H hard under load for an hour or so, you'll probably see some oil consumption. That's ok, and it's up to you when to do something about it, but if it doesn't use more than a quart every 5-10 hours or so, I wouldn't worry about it.
