I would agree, most likely the spring broke or became disconnected. If it came disconnected, I would think the weights or some part of their assembly is not operating smoothly when the throttle lever is returned to idle. So you might check the operation of these parts before buttoning things back up; otherwise, the problem may re-occur quickly.
