Need Help on a cub

I have my brothers old cub, it has set for 4 yrs. someone stold batt.& cables, moter not stuck. My question, The cover is off magneto But it has a 12V coil on top of head w/coil wire going to the magneto and a wire from - side of coil to side of magneto, can it run like this? I will get a batt, and cables and can run wire from batt, to + side of coil. will this allow coil to fire magneto? I'm going to sell the tractor but it would be better running tks. for any help
