Mine had got so bad that the inlet to the strainer would clog every minute or so with fine rust. I picked up another (rusty) tank at an auction, and swapped with the one on the tractor. I made a bracket from a couple pieces of channel iron and some plywood and bolted the original tank to the rear wheel. I then put about 5-10 lbs of 3/4" hard limestone rock in the tank and left it on there while mowing, etc. Gotta be very careful not to sideswipe anything with the tank on there. Washed it out several times with water, then used a fuel tank sealer kit from POR-15. (www-por15.com) This includes a detergent, phosphoric acid wash, and sealer. Make sure it's absolutely dry before sealing. So far, so good. Still haven't swapped tanks back, so I can't vouch for the sealer, but it looks good inside.
