Red and Steve are right. I've had internal cracks like this drilled and pinned as they describe. But if the cracks are small and isolated, that is, not cracked from one end of the block to the other, I have gotten away with a good thick coat of Permatex Aviation gasket sealer and proper torque down of the head. Again, this will work but that doesn't make it right.
