Kurt, I did axle seals on my H in September. It is not a hard job , just eats up some time. Removing the rear wheels is the big part. Loosen the bolts on the hub blocks and slide the wheels off the axel. I did one at a time for stability. I spent some time cleaning the axle and rubbing it down with fine emery cloth. The new seal has to slide along the length of the axle so it needs to be smooth. Remove the four bolts that hold the axle housing cover and slide the assembly off. Clean off the old seal and gasket and replace. I lubed the axle with lots of clean oil to slide every thing back in place. Torque the bolts back on. I wiped the axle clean and washed it off with Varsol. I replaced my wheels using an anti seize on the threads of the hub blocks. This keeps the bolts from rusting in . LOCKTITE makes an anti seize product. I was able to get the seals from my local Case-IH dealer, but they were pricey. Jobbers can find seals and gaskets cheaper. By the time I was done I had used up most of the morning, four hours or so, some can do it quicker, I like to take my time. My old H now has new brake seals, pto seals and axle seals, purrs like a kitten. I have two H's and an M but I like working on the H, the other I have restored and just have hood and grill to paint.. its the old rusty one that is the best tractor of the three..good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
