As an electrician I would strongly advise not charging an 8 volt battery with a 12 volt charger. It is possible, that it would be okay, apparently someone else has been doing it successfully for years. But even if it is, it is going to be hard on your battery. You could add the proper resistance in a series into the circuit when it is set to twelve volts and with a meter verify that only 8 volts are getting through to the battery. That is certainly the way I would approach it from my perspective. I don't mean to scare you but one thing is for sure, if you are messing around with things you do not understand, or attempting to charge it with a 12 volt charger, you should do so outside and not in your garage or basement. And I would advise wearing safety glasses. An exploded battery can be a very serious matter.
