Cotton Picker Tractors

A couple of days ago while I was at my daughter's, I answered a question about picker tractors and drop housings. However, it was at the bottom of page four and dropped off a few hours later so I'll answer it again. Although IHC built one row cotton pickers from the early 40's through the early 70's, after the two row came out in 1957 only new two row pickers were sold in our area, although the used one row pickers were still popular with the smaller growers. The M's and other simular size (SM, 400, 450, 560, etc) used under high drum pickers were not high clearance tractors. The drop housings contained bull gears rather than chains. This reversed the direction of the tractor for the picker operation. On the low drum pickers it was necessary to use a reversable transmission top and flip the differential to reverse the direction of the tractor. If you ordered a new M, SM, etc. through 560 from the factory as a high drum cotton picker tractor, you got the flange type rear axle housings. However, you could put the flange type rear axle housings on any regular tractor and then it could be used under the high drum picker. Same for low drum pickers. If you ordered a low drum picker tractor you got a reversable transmission top. However you could take any H/M thru 460/560 and install a reversable transmission top and use it under a low drum picker. The single guide wheel was a 7:50 x 20 on the high drum and 7:50 x 16 under the low drum picker. Don't remember who posted the original question but I think this covers all he asked.
