The alternator has to turn at a fairly high rpm to start charging. Once started, it will continue to charge at lower RPMs. Since these tractors run at low rpm as compared to a car engine, the alternators sometimes have this problem on an old tractor. I have two tractors with this problem, and I have to pull back the throttle linkage to the carburator to race the engine to get the charging started. I have to do this each time I start the things. Unfortunately, I think the linkage to the carb on the M is closed, so not so easy to do this. If you have not already done so, you need to get the smallest possible pulley for your alternator to make it turn as fast as possible. That will help. Others here on the Forum may have othe suggestions. I had not heard about the cut out switch mentioned by OhioBill. Wonder if all the one wire alternators have that, and how do you change it.
