44A Finally Charging!!

Bob M. and the guys,
Could not get any charge out of my alternator.
Today I went to the dump and pulled an alternator out of an old car (Delco Remy) looks the very same as my original, swapped it out and WOW, the warning light went OUT for the first time. The amp gauge showed a charge of 30A, full deflection on the needle at a fast idle, turned on the lights, and the charge dropped a bit to about 25A. The battery was about 12.2vdc before I started it up , and then went first to about 13.5vdc and settled at about 14.05vdc. while the A was running.
My question now is , should the charge rate be that high? 30A?, or will it settle down as the battery comes up toward 13 or more volts.
