since your getting within 3/4 to one inch,i think your not lined up with the pilot bearing.this could be that the clutch plate is not exactly lined up right or there could be a burr on the bearig or trans shaft.as bob said try turning the fly wheel.sometimes i have to block the front wheels and put the tractor in gear and turn the flywheel,this makes the rear wheels turn and puts pressure on the front end.
