Jim,the definitions were taken directly from an aircraft powerplant textbook.The turbosupercharger is an exhaust driven turbine that compresses air,we now just call these "Turbos" for short,but since it is externally driven,it would fit in the definition I gave,at least as applied to aircraft engines.The Internal mechanical driven system is a Supercharger,wether it is gear driven or belt driven, they are just compressors-one driven by exhaust gasses flowing through a turbine(Turbosuperchargers,Turbo for short) -one driven by mechanical means like gears or belts (Superchargers). The GM style blower on dragsters that is run by a belt is a Roots style compressor,these are used in aircraft,but usually as a cabin air compressor.The Roots compressor is a kind of hybrid, I think the original application was for GM diesel bus engines,as that's where a lot of hot-rodders took them from when the busses were sent to the junkyard (or so I've heard).The carbs mounted on these blowers allowed the fuel/air mix to be pushed into the cyliders faster-more fuel could be burned creating more power.Bob's original ? was about the "Turbosupercharged" airplane engines,in trying to explain that it was just a fancy name for Turbo,I Overexplained as I sometimes(always!) do.I hope you can forgive an old man(33) for rambling!8^) BillJ
