A little story of warning for ya'll; Here in Maryland, about fifteen years ago a gentleman got tired of getting his box mashed by the local high schoolers. To "teach them a lesson" he put the next
one up with a concrete block inside and steel I-beam post. When the boy hit the box he was pulled from the vehicle and subsequently died from his injuries.
Now the punch line: The gentleman who "kid-proofed" the mailbox is now in jail. Seems that the mail boxes are in the public right-of-way anytime they are that close to the street, and setting a "booby trap" with intention to harm is illegal. If you look in the postal regulations (atleast around here) it is illegal to put up more than the regular "tin" quality boxes. I know, I know - I still see the ones entrenched in brickwork, and the steel plate ones here too, but that don't mean its legal and safe. Now my box gets whached about once every other year, and each time it happens, I think of that story and figure the $5 bucks for a new box is more "affordable" than a jail term (or a teenagers life).
