UF, Most likely the bottom end of the gear shift lever is worn. Remove the knockout on one side of the pin that holds the shifter in the deck housing. Punch the pin out and remove the lever. Take a large screw driver and align all the shifting forks with the slot in line. May have to have the end of the lever built up and ground down with relatively sharp corners. Reinstall lever, pin, and knock out and the problem should go away./FB
