There are engineering formulae available for calculating flat belt parameters. The short answer is that the longer the belt the easier it is to hook up. Alignment gets much more critical with shorter belts. And tension is difficult to maintain. With a long belt, belt sag gives you all the tension and an inch or so of tractor creep does not appreciably affect it. In the archives I gave some flat belt formulae several months back for someone who was trying to determine whether to use v-belts or flat belts. You might search for that. The information I most often use comes from Mark's Mechanical Engineer's Handbook about 1970 edition. Libraries should have it. Flat belt work is fun.
