I don't think they actually "Burnt-Up" the valves. I think without some sort of extended pipe on the manifold the heat escaped and cool air got to the exh. valves and warped them so they wouldn't seal. Your right, Lot's of different brands of tractors ran straight pipes from the factory. Oliver is the first one that comes to mind. A few minutes idling before the tractor is shut off cools the valves enough to eliminate the problem.
