I'm not really up on laws & regulations that cover auctions. However, I believe if you bid and don't pay and leave the item, the auction company will come looking for you. Of course if it is a small item it might not be worth their trouble and they would overlook it. It used to be that at most auctions, the auctioneer knew everyone, and they went by name only. Nowadays, every one I go to reguires you to have a bidder number and they get all your info when they issue the number, so they know where you are. As to the question about someone else taking your item. I think once you are the winning bidder, it is yours and you are responsible for it and that means paying for it. If someone else took it, they are a thief and can be prosecuted.
