The 10 hr recommendation is proper but is for hard use under dusty conditions. The oil bath air cleaners are very high efficiency. When you dump the old oil out be sure to clean the dirt left in the bottom. As long as the dirt has not built up over 1/4 inch in the bottom of the cup (some say 1/2 inch) the air cleaner has been cleaned soon enough. Tractors used on grass and pavement need their air cleaner cups cleaned spring and fall to get moisture out of the oil.

Disking in dusty conditions (where you cannot see the tractor hood on the down wind pass around the field) you barely get 1/4 inch buildup in a 10 hr day. Your nose gets more buildup than the air cleaner.

Manufacturers went to paper air filters to save money, not for improved efficiency although the paper filters WHEN CLEAN have a little less restriction.

Old timers used used oil for air cleaners. It is not recommended. I use drip oil collected from "empty" oil cans of all types: motor oil, hydraulic fluid, ATF, gear oil, etc.
