Maybe the generator is bad. It should require no conversion to use the regulator. Only three wires are required. One from the F terminal on the regulator to the F terminal on the generator. One from the Gen terminal on the generator to the Gen terminal on the regulator. And one from the Bat terminal on the regulator to the battery, usually though the ammeter on the way to the battery. You do not need to hook anything to the L terminal on the regulator. L stands for load, or lights and is the same as hooking to a wire from the battery. Be sure your regulator has a good ground. You may need to run a wire from the mounting lug to a good ground. Also use No. 12 or larger wire for the wire from the gen to gen terminal on the regulator and for the wire from the Bat terminal to the Battery.
