This may have happened: The carb float needle didn't shut properly (dirt on the seat, float hung or sunk) and the carb flooded with gas. Gas then filled the manifold and air cleaner, then finally drained into the crankcase thru an open intake valve and past a cylinder, or possibly thru the air cleaner crankcase vent tube. The carb drip opening (at the bottom of the carb near the choke plate) also had to have been plugged for this to occur. Whatever the cause, it's a good reason to shut off the fuel at the sediment bowl when leaving the tractor!
