I just finished rebuilding the hydraulics on my second 300U. My first one had a backhoe attachment so there were lots of hydraulic parts and problems. Anyway, basically, the procedure is not technically difficult--just lots of parts to remove. There is a very fine mesh intake screen (strainer) that can be accessed by removing lots of bolt on parts. Most are under the seat but you may have to remove all your hydraulic hoses and the parts connected to the hydraulic reservoir lid under the seat. If your strainer screen is original, it is a designed like a "T" with a pipe connection threaded to this top lid. It is straight threads with an o-ring and lock nut. If it is in decent shape, you can clean it well and re-install. The strainer on my recently purchased 300 was crushed and damaged from being sooo dirty that the hydraulic pump sucked it in like a deflated baloon. The prior owner must have had this problem because he cut into the pump return line and ran a line from the hydralic reservoir via the drain plug. I fabricated a new mesh strainer for mine but I also plan on utilizing this new return line and and a spin-on filter set up. The parts and shop manuals are of some help but it is almost a learn-by-doing thing. The top gasket is available from Case-IH.
