F-20 axle leaking oil

I have a oil leak at the rear axle shaft out by the wheel. The manual I have shows that you have to completely disassemble the bull gear housing to get the axle stub shaft out.Can I just remove the small cover on the inside of the bull gear housing and drive the axle out of will the bull drop down? I would like to fix this problem without major disassembly as the tractor has a fairly new paint job. All help appreciated.
