Tired Farmall A

Posted by Brian on September 15, 2001 at 21:07:39 from (24.101.171.230):

I am currently working on restoring a 1949 Farmall Super that had been left out for a couple of years. The tractor belonged to my grandfather, and was used for light duty around the homestead. After getting the motor unstuck a couple of months ago I installed a tune up kit and fired it up ( I was able to move it back inside where it belongs). However, I immediately found some problems ( the engine was "backfiring or "popping" through the carb) and therefore I started to tear it down. Having taking the head off, the pistons out and the front and middle main bearings off (lower half), I have found all kinds of bad things. The valves were terrible, the seats the same, the rings are worn and there is about .080 to .200" between the pistons and the cylinders ( I think the thing has been bored once already). In addition, the connecting rod bushings (piston pin) are really worn, and I can move the crankshaft up and down about .030" in the main bearing at the front of the motor.

So, my work is cut out for me and I know I'm going to have to start sinking money into it. I've been talking with the local Case International dealer, they've been very helpful, but it's going to cost a fortune to get the parts through them ( i.e. $340.00 for each piston & sleeve assembly). I have seen on the internet some sites having engine rebuild kits for about $500.oo US. These kits include pistons, rings, sleeves, valves, springs and all bearings. They are a 3 1/8" bore instead of the 3".
So what I would like to know from anyone is if you have any experience rebuilding these, where you get your parts and what you think of the aftermarket kits you can get from the states.

Thanks
Brian Carter

Today's Featured Article - Box Plow Blues - by Tom Schwarz. One of the first implements most tractor owners obtain is the box plow. For very little money, this piece of equipment promises to plow and flatten any hill or vale on your ranch road or farm. At least that's what I thought! As simple as a box plow appears, it can be rather challenging to make work correctly. In our sandy soils of Florida, traction is king. You can never have wide enough tires or heavy enough weights to get all the traction you want … unless you own a monster tractor. U ... [Read Article]
