The clicking sound at the solenoid suggests that you have a poor electrical connection. Before you go ripping & tearing things apart, check all electrical connections. The one most overlooked is the ground cable where it connects to ground. Disconnect and clean both cables at both ends. Look for signs of heat at both cable ends. (melted insulation etc.) Cables do fail. Especially if they are old. The solenoid is another possible source of the problem.
